SYRACUSE, N.Y. (NCC News) — A proposed Syracuse municipal dog shelter has found its forever home.
Syracuse city officials have settled on a 14,200-square-foot office building/warehouse at 3614 Burnet Ave. to be the site of a new municipal dog shelter, according to Syracuse.com. The East Syracuse location is owned by Skytop Realty LLC, which it acquired for $615,000. Mayor Sharon Owens’ administration is already in talks to purchase the building, although officials are waiting for the Syracuse Common Council’s approval of an appraisal request. The request was submitted on Wednesday, and a vote will take place on Monday.
Owens confirmed the site was close to being finalized last week, having recently toured the property alongside city officials. Syracuse has struggled to house a growing number of stray dogs for years. The Burnet Avenue warehouse can house 60 to 65 dogs, nearly double what the city’s current facility has the capacity for, said mayor’s office spokeswoman Sol Muñoz.
