MARCELLUS, N.Y. — Watercolor artist Lucie Wellner is exhibiting a new series of paintings, “Where We Stop and Nature Begins,” at Baltimore Woods Nature Center through Oct. 30.

Many of the works depict a single person, either a full figure or a head portrait, among leaves, palettes and flowers. The colors are both bright and subdued, blended to evoke the positive feelings Wellner intends to share.

Wellner said the series explores “how the edges between our minds and nature are blurred.” It also conveys the “blissful feeling we get when we allow those barriers to soften as much as possible,” she said.

Wellner is a longtime member of Baltimore Woods, said Aimee Chiore, the center’s business manager. Her work has hung in the gallery before, and her watercolor cards of central New York (and Syracuse University) landmarks are sold in the gift shop.

Chiore said Wellner created this collection specifically for the exhibit. The paintings are for sale, along with prints and stationery depicting landscapes and local scenes. A portion of the proceeds supports the center’s mission of enriching the lives of central New Yorkers through personal connections to nature.

The center is a nonprofit that has been connecting people with nature since 1966. It offers six miles of hiking trails and runs programs year-round for people of all ages.

Wellner was raised in central New York and still lives there, in a region of rolling drumlins, farms, wildflowers and trees. That landscape shapes her daily life and her paintings. When she isn’t working on her practice, she teaches watercolor classes through CazArts Art Alliance in Cazenovia.

She has been painting with watercolor since 1997, the materials are simple and portable, which she says suits her travels around the state and country.

The main reason she keeps returning to the medium, she said, is that paper, water and color create endless possibilities. Sort of like nature.

“I never stopped exploring this medium,” she said, “and I haven’t reached the end yet.”
