SYRACUSE, N.Y. (NCC NEWS) – New York drivers need to slow down this week. The second-ever installation of speed enforcement week was announced by Governor Kathy Hochul on Sunday.
The program heavily increases the number of law enforcement on highways and streets, and runs from August 3 through August 9.
In a press release, Hochul said “These enforcement campaigns are crucial, as speeding continues to be a leading cause of fatal crashes each year in New York State.”
The last time New York ran this program, in early June of 2026, the state handed out over 56,000 tickets, including more than 14,000 for speeding, over 2,200 for distracted driving and over 1,300 for impaired driving.
“I think it’s really needed,” Billie Trapani, a Syracuse resident, said. “I live on a block with a school, and the speed limit says 30 but drivers zip through it all the time.”
In 2025, there were more than 200 speed-related crashes in New York state that involved a fatality.

William Jackson: New York drivers will need to watch their speed this week. There will be a heavily increased presence of state troopers on roads and highways through August 9. This is all a part of Governor Kathy Hochul second-ever speed enforcement week. Syracuse resident Carrie Frobe says with the I-690 and I-81 construction, the crackdown is needed.
Carrie Frobe: Especially with all the construction, I believe that it would help cut down on accidents and possibly fatalities.
Jackson: Local law enforcement will have an increased focus on speeding. Frobe says the crackdown should also concentrate on residential areas with children.
Frobe: All those kids, you don’t who’s gonna dart out and who’s not, so I think it definitely should be done in school zones.
