SYRACUSE, N.Y. (NCC News) — The Town of Manlius Police stationed outside of the Fayetteville Fire Department on March 9 as an opportunity for parents to get their car seats inspected.

According to the CDC, car accidents are a leading cause of death among young children. Town of Manlius Police Officer Justin Lefebvre said he sees improper installation all the time.

“The most common mistake with car seat installation is installing it too loosely or installing it inappropriately. People will use the anchors to secure the car seat along with the seat belt, which you can’t do. You have to pick one or the other; you can’t use both,” said Lefebvre.

The Town of Manlius Police also provide car seats to community members who cannot afford one or have one that has been recalled.

Here is a list of the upcoming car seat inspections:

  • May 17 – 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Manlius Police Department
  • June 11 – 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Manlius Fire Department
  • July 16 – 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. at Minoa Fire Department Station 1
  • Aug. 20 – 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Green Lakes State Park
