VIDEO TRANSCRIPT: New York bill approved, would impact sports gambling sites
Elliot Pototsky: Sports betting is nothing new, but the mindset of New York bettors could be changing very soon.
Daivon Grainger: For people that are smart with their betting, it will give them a chance to understand their overhead, how much they’re spending, how much they’re putting in.
Pototsky: New York is the first state to approve a bill that would require sports betting sites to send monthly statements to its users.
Grainger: For other people, I feel like they won’t really pay attention to it. Maybe it will become more of a thing, getting it to people’s attention. I feel like every day, we spend money here, we spend money there.
Pototsky: Daivon Grainger is not the only one who believes people’s attitudes toward sports betting could shift.
Jay Works: We need to start helping each other in finding other resources to help. Say, hey, I need to minimize my bank for a month or a week or a day.
Pototsky: And for those who are already struggling, Jay Works says asking for help is always a good option.
Works: I need to calm down. I need to stop. Or I need help. And reaching out for help in gambling or any addiction is the best thing for you.
Pototsky: Grainger, meanwhile, says it’s important to remember how much gambling plays a role in people’s lifestyle.
Grainger: For some people it is like a job. They might plan it out. For other people it’s like a leisure thing. It’s like the stock market.
Pototsky: And like the stock market, both the positive and negative impacts of this industry will depend on the people who get involved.
SYRACUSE, N.Y. (NCC News) — Sports betting has become a major part of entertainment for many New Yorkers, but new legislation could encourage gamblers to take a closer look at their spending habits.
New York is aiming to become the first state to require sports betting operators to send users monthly statements detailing their gambling activity. The reports would provide bettors with information about how much money they have wagered, won, and lost over a given period.
Some local bettors believe that if New York Gov. Kathy Hochul signs the bill, it could help people become more aware of their gambling habits.
“For people that are smart with their betting, it will give them a chance to understand their overhead, how much they’re spending, how much they’re putting in,” said local sports bettor Daivon Grainger.
Grainger said that while some people may benefit from the added insight, many users may not pay much attention to the reports. One Syracuse resident, however, believes the proposal could spark conversations about responsible gambling.

Jay Works said increased awareness may encourage people to seek help before betting becomes a larger problem.
“We need to start helping each other in finding other resources to help,” Works said.
For those already struggling with gambling addiction, Works emphasized the importance of reaching out for assistance.
“I need to calm down. I need to stop. Or I need help,” Works said, describing the mindset that can lead someone to seek support. “Reaching out for help in gambling or any addiction is the best thing for you.”
In a statement, Elliott Rapaport, founder of gambling rehabilitation provider Birches Health, said giving access to support services for individuals dealing with gambling remains critical to prevent any decisions that could harm someone even more.
“We have seen that individuals often do not realize how much they have lost until it is too late, when it has resulted in serious impacts on other parts of their lives,” Rapaport said.
