BALDWINSVILLE, N.Y. (NCC News) – There are many reasons to vote on Election Day. Gary Sultan votes to honor his father.
Sultan’s father left Nazi Germany following World War II. His father lived there for five years, and Sultan said it’s why he believes voting is important.
“My father lived under the Nazis for five years, and I believe that’s what a lot of people died for; it’s our right.”
Sultan said his father’s sacrifice, and that of others, gives him the responsibility to vote and an appreciation for being able to do so.
“I love this country and appreciate everything it’s done for us.”
Sultan, along with many others, voted at the Canton Woods Senior Center.
Located in Baldwinsville, Canton Woods opened in 1968 as a medical center the village built to attract doctors. When they left a few years later, it sat empty until 1978, when the local Senior Club bought it with county funding.
The Village of Baldwinsville owns the property, and the village shares its costs with the towns of Lysander and Van Buren. On a typical weekday, people 60 and older come for lunch, Tai Chi, cards, and the book club, and Meals on Wheels runs out of its kitchen.
On Election Day, it is the polling place for Van Buren districts 2, 3, and 9. Polls close at 9 p.m. Tuesday.
