VIDEO TRANSCRIPT: Young artists showcase winner finds confidence and future in art
Desiree Robinson: For the first time, 18-year-old Madilynne Madore has her artwork hanging inside the Everson Museum of Art. She won her age division in the Young Artists Showcase.
The colorful mixed-media portrait is inspired by someone she knows well.
Madilynne Madore: It is a picture of my sister. She’s a little ball of energy, so I like to have that come out in multiple pieces I make of her.
Robinson: Madore used a photo she took a few summers ago as a reference, then added her own artistic style to capture her sister’s personality.
Madore’s sister: It’s very, like colorful. Very like a bubbly person.
Robinson: Madore says art has been part of her life for as long as she can remember.
Madore: I’ve been doing art with my grandmother since I was like three years old, and we would just sit in her dining room just painting. And so I’ve kind of done it my whole life.
Robinson: For young artists, having their work displayed in a museum can be both validating and inspiring.
Lauren Wojtalewski: I think giving the kids an opportunity to be displayed in the museum, it just makes arts much more accessible.
Robinson: For Madore, the recognition meant more than having her work displayed on a museum wall.
Madore: It made me like, decide on going to college for art. I was really hesitant before, but after being accepted, I decided that I would be going for that.
Robinson: The showcase continues through the summer, giving visitors a chance to see the work of some of Central New York’s youngest artists.
SYRACUSE, N.Y. (NCC News) — What started as a portrait of her younger sister became a turning point for 18-year-old Madilynne Madore.
After winning her age division in the Everson Museum of Art’s Young Artists Showcase, Madore said the recognition helped convince her to pursue art in college.
“I was very, very surprised,” Madore said. “I didn’t think I would get it at all. So I kind of forgot about it because I didn’t think I had a chance.”
Now, her winning mixed-media portrait is on display at the museum as part of the May/June Young Artists Showcase.
The artwork features Madore’s younger sister, Guinevere Madore, and was inspired by a photograph she took a few summers ago before a family swimming trip.
“She’s a little ball of energy, so I like to have that come out in multiple pieces I make of her,” Madore said.
Art has been part of Madore’s life for as long as she can remember.
“I’ve been doing art with my grandmother since I was like 3 years old,” she said. “We would just sit in her dining room painting. I’ve kind of done it my whole life.”
The Young Artists Showcase is a partnership between the Everson Museum of Art and 315Mom Magazine. The program invites young artists to submit original artwork for consideration. Winning entries are displayed in the hallway leading to the Daniel Family Education Center and are also featured in 315Mom Magazine.
According to Kaziah Searles, the museum’s director of marketing and communications, the opportunity to have artwork displayed in a museum setting makes the program unique.
“Being able to submit artwork and then have a chance to be shown in such a well-known museum in Central New York, I think is exciting for people,” Searles said.
Lauren Wojtalewski, the museum’s creative director, said the showcase helps connect young artists to the broader arts community while making the museum feel more accessible.
“Giving the kids an opportunity to be displayed in the museum, it just makes arts much more accessible,” Wojtalewski said.
She hopes the experience encourages participants to continue pursuing creative interests.
“I hope that they realize that anyone can do art,” Wojtalewski said. “Everyone is capable of creating art. It just takes practice and a lot of dedication.”
For Madore, the recognition has already had a lasting impact.
“It made me decide on going to college for art,” Madore said. “I was really hesitant before, but after being accepted, I decided that I would be going for that.”
The May/June Young Artists Showcase winners will remain on display at the Everson Museum of Art through June 28. The exhibit features three winning works selected through the museum’s partnership with 315Mom Magazine.
Submissions are currently open for the July/August Young Artists Showcase. Selected works will be displayed at the museum and featured in a future issue of 315Mom Magazine.
