SYRACUSE, N.Y — Within a week two Syracuse University fraternities are under fire, amidst hazing allegations, and students are voicing their concerns.
Leaked footage depicting disturbing hazing rituals quickly went viral on social media, leading to widespread reactions across campus. Due to the sensitive nature of the allegations and to protect those involved, NCC News has chosen to keep the identities of interviewed students confidential.
“I always knew there was a type of hazing, but I never knew it got that bad,” shared one student in response to the leaked footage.
Reports first emerged surrounding Phi Kappa Psi, or Phi Psi, where videos allegedly show fraternity pledges forced to engage in extreme acts, including one graphic clip where pledges are seen vomiting on each other.
These videos, which quickly went viral on “x,” have prompted strong reactions, including one from Chancellor Kent Syverud, who stated: “I’m disgusted by the actions that appear in those videos and condemn this conduct.”
Just days later, reports surfaced of another fraternity, Psi Upsilon, or Psi U, also facing hazing allegations. As far as what was in those reports made against the Pi chapter of Psi U is unclear; but Chief Student Experience Allen Groves released a statement saying there was enough evidence to place the fraternity on an interim suspension, amplifying student concerns and raising questions about campus Greek life culture.
NCC News reached out to both fraternities, their national chapters and the Inter-fraternity Council, but none have provided statements. Syracuse University, however, responded to NCC News’ statement request saying “the university does not comment on active investigations,” and that both fraternities are currently on interim suspension. Meanwhile, the Inter-fraternity Council has issued a statement expressing readiness to support anyone impacted by hazing.
As the investigation continues, the Syracuse University community remains on edge, waiting to see how these allegations will be addressed and what actions may be taken to prevent further incidents.
