The Campos Center Opens t Syracuse University
Transcript

Malachi: The College of Engineering and Computer Science got a new addition on Thursday, and it’s safe to say that it was quite the attraction

Here on the second floor of the Life Sciences Building, the new Campos Student Center had it’s grand opening and kicked off with games, gifts, and most importantly, free food

The center is meant to act as a hub that can foster a sense of belonging for students

But delicious treats and entertainment isn’t all that the center has planned, and Abby Fite, the Director of Inclusive Excellence at the Center for Science and Technology, says that this space is neccessary to guarentee student success

Fite: We know that students who feel a sense of belonging in their college have higher rates of persistence, retention, and graduation, so they’re doing better in their classes, they’re graduating at higher rates

Malachi: But the center also isn’t purely about classwork and academics, and for Alex Dunbar, the director of communications for the college, this is meant to be a casual space for students

Dunbar: We don’t want this to just be about classes and labs, like we want this to also be about students and their life and them feeling comfortable and having those spaces in between all those other activities, and I think this is fantastic for that

Malachi: The Capos Center will be open from 9-5 Monday through Friday, and for more information on their programming visit engineeringSU on Instagram

Syracuse, N.Y. (NCC NEWS) – Students at Syracuse University’s College of Engineering and Computer Science now have a new location to study and hang out.

On the second floor of the Life Sciences Building, the Campos Student Center had its grand opening with a reception on Feb. 13.

Students came to the center all day long  for a welcoming ceremony that featured giveaways.

The new student center is named after Marco Campos, who pledged $2.15 million dollars to the Forever Orange Campaign last year. All of his donation went directly to the construction of the student center.

Campos, the father of a sophomore at SU, is the founder of the Campos Foundation, which is dedicated to providing opportunities for underrepresented communities in STEM.

Abby Fite, the Director of Inclusive Excellence in the College of Engineering and Computer Sciences, says that the new space represents a shift in the way the college supports their students.

“We haven’t had enough community gathering spaces where people can come rest between classes, meet friends, make friends, and I think our students are excited to have that space,” said Fite.

For students like senior Colin Chamberlain, the Campos Center is a welcome addition to a building he has spent so much time in.

“It’s really cool that we have this now because as an ECS student, I spend a lot of time in LSB (Life Sciences Building), and I can come in here, relax, chill, hang out, talk to my friends, get help with homework, so I think it’s a really great space for that,” said Chamberlain.

Alex Dunbar, director of Communications for the College of Engineering and Computer Science, added that this space gives the college numerous possibilities for future event programming.

“To be able to host some events or bring people together and have a place for people to gather and be comfortable,” said Dunbar.

The Campos Center will be staffed and run by 17 Campos Undergraduate Fellows, who represent students from underserved communities. They will design and facilitate programming at the center.
