Jake Klein: Fans who donate blood this week at the Red Cross Donation Center in Liverpool get a free limited-edition Metallica t-shirt. The blood drive is part of the band’s non-profit, but Red Cross supervisor Alexis Radell says it’s also a big boost for her organization.
Alexis Radell: I think it’s very cool, the fact that they want to incorporate and get people to donate blood.
Klein: Radell says donor turnout has spiked by over 60% this week thanks to the promotion, but she also hopes that donors who came for the t-shirt keep on coming back.
Radell: People need to remember that after this promotion is over, the need for blood doesn’t change. We need donors all year round.
LIVERPOOL, N.Y. (NCC News) — Ahead of its Saturday concert at Syracuse’s JMA Wireless Dome, heavy metal band Metallica has teamed up with the Red Cross of Central New York, offering free limited edition t-shirts to those who give blood this week.
The Red Cross Blood Donation Center in Liverpool will dole out the shirts to donors who make an appointment through the Red Cross website this week. Mellatica’s All Within My Hands Foundation focuses on supporting critical local services, like blood donation, in communities where the band performs.
“I think it’s very cool that they want to incorporate and get people to donate blood,” Liverpool Red Cross supervisor Alexis Radell said.
Radell says, through the first few days of the drive, donation numbers have spiked nearly 60%. But she also hopes it serves as a reminder for those who come for the free shirt that the Red Cross needs donors all the time.
“People need to remember that after this promotion is over, the need for blood doesn’t change,” she said. “We need donors all year round.”
The free shirt promotion extends through Friday, April 18. The band takes the stage in Syracuse the following night.
