I’m Kelsey Jones, reporting for NCC News. Here are the stories making news today, March 17th. The looming threat of increased electricity bills has caused speculation that Trump’s proposed tariffs on Canada will prompt central New Yorkers to make a switch to solar panels, but Solar Liberty salesman Brian Kraus says trends show that is unlikely.
KRAUS: Na- na- not so much an increase, uh, but we’ve stayed steady really, while the rest of the industry has somewhat declined over the past, you know, year and a half or two years or so.
Kraus points to Washington for reasons behind the decline.
KRAUS:Certainly uncertainty with, uh, with tax credits is of course gonna play into that with the, uh, with the new administration here. That’s something that is generally on the forefront of a lot of people’s minds.
In other news, Syracuse coffee connoisseurs can get a taste of Ireland at Salt City Market today. The local store is selling St. Patrick’s Day merch including Irish flags, green flowers and other Irish swag. The University Avenue branch of Salt City also has a Lucky Charms cereal milk latte to celebrate the holiday. Even as central New Yorkers move into spring, residents continue to feel the effects of winter. This year’s heavy snows caused more roof collapses and fallen debris than usual, but the damages have benefited some members of the community. CEO of the Home Builders and Remodelers of Central New York Mary Thompson says some businesses have seen a rise in demand.
THOMPSON: Bartlett Tree Experts and, and those kind of folks who, um, will, uh, help with branches that are stuck or things like that. Um, th- they’re doing quite well because there’s been a lot of damage again with the tough winter.
Residents are looking to finish repairs before the summer. Continuing with weather for the rest of the day, central New York residents can expect cloudy skies with a high of 35 degrees and a 50% chance of precipitation.
