Cam McGraw: Upstate Medical University is opening a new biobehavioral health unit in Syracuse, New York to help children dealing with isolation and developmental disabilities. Dr. Henry Roane, executive director of the Golisano Center for Special Needs, says it’s not just about mental health treatment.

Dr. Henry Roane: “You can almost think about it as getting everybody on the same page, and how they should respond to their child’s behavior and the needs of their child.”

McGraw: The first of its kind facility in New York state will house eleven beds for children ages 5 to 17 from all around Central New York. Roane says everyone has diverse needs and the unit strives to be accepting and accommodating.

Roane: “There is hope. There is a way that we can work together to learn to manage these behavior problems, and I think that’s really the big thing for parents”
