SYRACUSE, N.Y. (NCC News) — Talking Cursive Brewing Company in downtown Syracuse does monthly flight nights in which it partners with various restaurants in the city to bring people beer and different gourmet foods. Their idea is to make the business into one that more than just sells beer but creates a whole atmosphere for their customers.
“Part of it is, people like having an experience when they dine out. So, it’s nice to go out to a restaurant and get a meal, but it’s also nice to get a full experience for whether it’s a girls night out or a date night,” said Alexis Colton, marketing and events manager.
Even when the weather can be unpredictable, Talking Cursive always has events going, and they welcome anyone over the age of 21.
While a lot of the flight nights are meant for people to stay at their tables and share the different foods with the people they came with, Talking Cursive also has more social events like its annual brewer’s dinners where individuals sit at community tables with strangers and have those opportunities to socialize.
Although customers who sit at the bar have the ability to socialize more, they get to have real conversations with the servers and can even strike up a conversation with the person next to them.
“Everything from the staff to just the music and the calm atmosphere, really promotes meeting whoever you’re sitting next to,” Jared Locke, a Talking Cursive customer said.
However, the brewery is more than just “a brewery.” It’s a venue space that runs all kinds of different events with beer being the backbone of it.
“It’s a brewery, a beer is at the heart of it, but there’s really something for everyone, and there’s always something to do,” Colton explains.
Talking Cursive works with other food companies in the area to put on these events because they both understand what it means to be a food and drink business.
“I mean it is definitely all about the local community and not giving back but like working with local businesses and just creating those partnerships,” said Colton.
Talking Cursive is open from Tuesday through Saturday, and they have a lot of events coming up. They have pop-up brunches on Sundays and new flight night ideas such as donuts, chocolates and double-baked potatoes.

Marketing and events manager Alexis Colton says that their idea is to create a whole atmosphere for their customers.
Alexis Colton: Part of it is, you know, people like having an experience when they dine out. So, it’s nice to go out to a restaurant and get a meal, but it’s also nice to get a full experience for whether it’s a girls’ night out or a date night.
Lipson: Even in rainy temperatures like these, some ravioli doesn’t hurt anyone. For regular customer Jared Locke, Talking Cursive’s whole setup is why he keeps coming back.
Jared Locke: Everything from the staff, to just the music and the calm atmosphere, really promotes meeting whoever you’re sitting next to.
Lipson: Colton explains that the brewery tries to cater to all kinds of people, even if they don’t like beer.
Colton: So breweries, in order to really stay relevant, have to have some other things going on. It can’t just be the beer. You know the beer is at the heart of it still but there has to be some other things to do, and to drink, and you know just to be open to more people. You know, something for everyone.
Lipson: Talking Cursive has done other food pairing nights such as macaroni and cheese, tacos or burgers. They plan to continue the different themes and have plenty of new ideas for future events. Jonah Lipson, NCC News.
