Syracuse, N.Y. (NCC News) — Voters going to the polls at Nottingham High School were treated to a rare site — a table with Krispy Kreme donuts for sale, just outside the polling place boundaries.
Dave Kirby was selling the sweet treats and speaking with voters to benefit the Interfaith Co-Op, a food pantry that feeds nearly 300 families in Syracuse each week. He says he traveled a long way to bring 100 dozen donuts to the city.
“We only do this once a year. And we do it with the donuts. Because Central New York, they don’t have Krispy Kreme, and they used to be here. And people really like them. They left New York State and now we have to go to Pennsylvania to pick them up,” Kirby said.
One woman, who asked not to be identified by name, brought her young son to the polls. They decided to indulge. She brought him to the polls as a teaching moment. She says she wants her son to know exercising your right to vote is normal.
“I want my kids to know this is what we do. So, it’s just part of life…. this is what we do on election day. We wake up and we go vote,” she said.
