AUDIO TRANSCRIPT: Syracuse students experience different travel home through snowy weather

Cam McGraw: Multiple feet of lake-effect snow piled up across New York this weekend, creating slippery roads and low visibility. But as NCC News’ Anna McCusker reports, just how bad it was depended on where you traveled from. Anna?

Anna McCusker: The first snow of the season in New York fell at an inconvenient time for Syracuse students traveling back to school after Thanksgiving break. Syracuse student Em Spencers’ drive from Kentucky to Syracuse normally takes 10 hours. Yesterday, it took 14.

Em Spencer: The snow was coming down so hard that it sounded like rain on my windshield, and there were areas where only one lane on the interstate was cleared so that slowed traffic down a ton.

McCusker: But another Syracuse student, Shivika Gupta, got back to campus with no problems at all.

Shivika Gupta: My drive in from Rochester yesterday wasn’t too bad. It was pretty clear honestly and very sunny actually, kind of surprising for it being December.

McCusker: Drivers should stay careful, as snow is expected to continue in Central New York through tomorrow morning. Live from the newsroom, I’m Anna McCusker, NCC News.

SYRACUSE, N.Y. (NCC News) — Multiple feet of lake-effect snow piled up across Northern and Western New York this weekend, creating slippery roads and low visibility. This was the first big snowfall of the season in New York, but it fell at an inconvenient time for Syracuse students who were traveling back to school after Thanksgiving break.

Syracuse student Em Spencers’ drive from Kentucky to Syracuse normally takes 10 hours. On Sunday, snowy conditions and traffic made the drive 14 hours.

“The snow was coming down so hard that it sounded like rain on my windshield, and there were areas where only one lane on the interstate was cleared so that slowed traffic down a ton,” Spencer said.

But surprisingly, not every student went through the same challenges. Another Syracuse student, Shivika Gupta, made her way back to campus with no problems at all.

“My drive in from Rochester yesterday wasn’t too bad. It was pretty clear honestly and very sunny actually, kind of surprising for it being December,” Gupta said.

Sunny or not, drivers should remain careful, as scattered snow showers are expected to continue in Central New York through Tuesday morning.
