SYRACUSE, N.Y. (NCC NEWS)— The Syracuse Rescue Mission has been continuously serving the local community since 1887. Their goal is to provide life-changing support that helps people get their lives back together.
According to Jill Weston, the volunteer coordinator at the Rescue Mission, serving meals is one of the most important jobs they do.
“We serve three meals a day, seven days a week, all year round. We serve about 200 people per meal, so about 700 meals a day, 200,000 meals a year,” said Weston.
In order to serve this many people, Weston says they need volunteers. She mentioned that the volunteers serve as the backbone of the organization.
“For the people we serve, when they see people coming in…it’s knowing that someone in the community thinks about you and cares enough to come down and give their time,” said Weston.
Another way to contribute to the Rescue Mission is by donating to or buying from Thrifty Shopper, a chain of local thrift stores. All of the revenue generated from Thrifty Shopper will go directly to providing food, shelter and clothing for those in the Central New York area.
