SYRACUSE, N.Y. (NCC NEWS) — The Visit Syracuse Annual Meeting and Destination Awards is taking place March 26 to showcase record-breaking achievements and outline a vision for the future growth of tourism in Onondaga County. SU football head coach Fran Brown will be offering opening remarks for the event.

Visit Syracuse President and CEO Danny Liedka believes Brown is a great fit to establish the connection between the organization and the community.

“Fran Brown is an excellent choice for our welcoming remarks. His ability to inspire and motivate teams aligns perfectly with our mission. Although we aren’t on a football field, the energy and drive we bring to tourism are just as impactful,” said Liedka in a press release.

Some other highlights of the event include an update by New York State Hospitality and Tourism Association President Mark Dorr, an “Elevating Tourism, Inspiring Growth” presentation by Liedka, networking with food and beverages provided by Bull & Bear Roadhouse, the Curd Nerd and Middle Ages and finally a music performance by Isreal Hagan of Stroke.

The event celebrates the immense growth of tourism in Onondaga County, particularly in recent years. Following Gov. Kathy Hochul’s announcement last fall of record-breaking tourism numbers in New York state for 2023, the momentum continued into 2024. Visitor spending in Onondaga County is now projected to surpass last year’s total of $1.3 billion.

Tourism is crucial to Onondaga County as it supports more than 15,000 jobs and generates $84M in local tax revenue and $66M in state tax revenue, according to Visit Syracuse. Liedka expressed pride in the efforts made by his team and tourism industry partners.

“Our convention sales team surpassed all booking goals in 2024 with an economic impact exceeding $39 million. Our world class marketing team has achieved a 60% increase in engagement across all social platforms. Visit Syracuse Film drove over $30 million in production revenue across the county, creating jobs and putting the region on the map,” said Liedka.

In order to commend the success of tourism in Onondaga County and hospitality partners who have made contributions to the county’s success the organization will present Destination Awards at the event. Award categories include: Sales Excellence, Catering Sales and Service Excellence, Service Excellence, Hospitality Hero, Hospitality Dream Team, Rising Star, and Legacy of Excellence.

The event takes place March 26 from 3-6 p.m. at the Middle Ages Brewing Company in Syracuse.
