Sunshine Horses Package – Clay, NY

SYRACUSE N.Y. (NCC News) – Sunshine Horses is a not-for-profit corporation, having spent the last 20 years rescuing equines in need and preparing them for their future forever home. The company thrives off its generous volunteers, who care for the horses 365 days a year.

“They come in and feed, lead them out to pasture, bring them in, groom them. They have to be groomed to get the dirt off at night after they come on. So, rain, shine, doesn’t matter if it’s Christmas or New Year’s Eve, you come in on your day,” volunteer Anna Renfrew said.

Almost 150 people volunteer for the 14 shifts offered each week. In addition, Sunshine Horses also manages its equine care committee. This group assesses each horse and assigns them an informal trainer called a schooler. The schooler then gives the horse food, medications and proper instruction.

“Our job is to put a little mileage on them, have them be able to have a rider on them, have them be able to walk,” Patty Wolf, member of the committee said.

The organization is always looking for more volunteers. To learn more about upcoming events or how to donate, visit sunshinehorses.org.
