SYRACUSE, N.Y. (NCC NEWS) – In Syracuse representatives from the New York State Department of Transportation held a press conference to discuss the measures that will be taken to mitigate the truck accidents on the Onondaga Lake Parkway Bridge.

The Onondaga Lake Parkway Bridge is a well known location in Syracuse as a place where many truck accidents occur. In 2006, a two-floor mega bus crashed into the bridge killing four people.

For years, accidents have been a recurrence and citizens have been urging for changes to be made to the Onondaga Lake Parkway Bridge. But nothing was done until today. Earlier this morning various representatives including NYSDOT Commissioner Marie Dominguez were present and proposed their solutions, including installing new warning signs and pavement markings.

“We will also reduce the follow of traffic on the parkway down to one lane in each direction on an interim basis this will help calm traffic and give over-height vehicles additional time to adhere to the warning signs and avoid the bridge,” said Dominguez.

State Sen. John Mannion was also present. He said that this issue is one that can be only solved through collective responsibility. So, while he makes an oath to do his job and ensure citizens’ voices are heard and changes are made, he asks citizens to play their part and abide by the new signs.
