CICERO, N.Y. (NCC News) – The polling place at Cicero Elementary was slow and steady this afternoon and elderly voters were some of the most common people stopping through. And while every voter has their own reasons for showing up, protecting the upcoming generations was motivation for several to get to the polls.

“I have two granddaughters,” said Patty Silversmith. “I’m very concerned about their future.”

Silversmith brought one of those granddaughters, Ava, with her to the polling place. She said she’s voting in hopes that she can help her granddaughter retain the freedoms women have gained in the past.

“I was one of those women who couldn’t get a loan to buy a car or credit cards.” she said.

Another voter who was looking out for the next generation was Ronald Barling. A retired firefighter, Barling has seen what happens to children who are uncared-for by the government system.

“Kids are one of my highest priorities between education, feeding them, protecting them,” Barling said.

Whether they’re voting to protect those who can’t or protecting their own rights, Cicero voters are making their voices heard.
