SYRACUSE, N.Y. (NCC News) – Chuck Schumer, Kathy Hochul, and Ryan McMahon gathered in Syracuse Tuesday morning to announce a rather large investment with Micron Technology. Micron is a large semiconductor company that creates various technological products for the world. One of their biggest projects to date will take place in Wine Pine Commerce Park, just 20 minutes outside of Syracuse.

Their new investment includes $100 billion being used to create a chip factory that will include a large clean-room space, covering the size of 40 football fields.

Governor Kathy Hochul raved about New York being the perfect place to create this innovation.

“This is New York State. Everything we do is bigger, bolder and better,” said Hochul.

Also excited about the news was Chuck Schumer who said that it was “almost an understatement to say that today is a great day for America. “

This new investment is set to create over 9,000 high-paying jobs in the next 20 years. 40,000 additional supply-chain and construction jobs will also be brought to New York State as a product of this advancement.

Many people have recognized this invention as the beginning of making Syracuse a global hub for innovation and manufacturing.

This global innovation will supply microchips made in New York, and end dependence on foreign made chips. These chips will be used for anything from an electric car to a smartphone.

“Micron’s goals and values as a company align so closely with New York’s…they were fully on board with our green chips…because they knew we would make commitments to our environment,” said Kathy Hochul about what she believes will be the “investment of the century.”

She went on to say that this project couldn’t have happened without the support from Micron CEO, Sanjay Mehrotra.

Micron has announced that preparation will begin next year, with hopes to have everything in full swing by 2025.

“New Yorkers and Americans will look back 50 years from now and remember this project as the Erie Canal moment,” said McMahon at the end of his statement. “This is the future.”
