TOLEDO, Ohio (NCC News) — It’s common knowledge that a dime is worth just 10¢ in U.S. dollars. But for three sisters from Ohio, it’s nearly half a million.
After their brother died, the sisters (who opted to stay anonymous) inherited a dime that he had put in a vault for more than four decades.
This specific coin was one of a select few minted in 1975 that doesn’t feature an “S” to signifiy its produciton in San Fransisco. These “No S Proof Dimes” are extremely difficult to find, as there has only been one other of its kind that are known to exist.
The only other dime that fits the category sold for just under $500,000. The newest one demanded $506,000 in a recent online auction.
The sisters’ brother and mother first bought the coin in 1978 for under $20,000. In hopes of having a safety blanket financially, the family held onto the dime over the years.
