VIDEO TRANSCRIPT: Pulso Central debuts as Central New York’s first spanish-speaking radio station
Gabriela Peniston: For Spanish speaking communities in Central New York, finding media in their native language can be challenging. But there’s one radio station that’s filling that gap. Pulso Central just celebrated their launch with their grand opening events with panels, music, food and networking opportunities.
Jesús Rolón: It feels really special. Special because I work a lot with the community and able to bring back this and give then give the community information, shows. So, I think this is a good feeling to be part of that group. So like looking back, wow what we built it was a great job.
Peniston: Pulso Central just started this year in September with a mission to serve the Spanish speaking community. According to data USA, a total of 5% of the Central New York population identify as Hispanic or latino. A relatively low number compared to larger cities. Unfortunately, it wasn’t until recently that local Spanish speakers had access to news, music, and stories in their native language.
Jade Aulestia: And especially like in this day and age of journalism, there’s a lot of misinformation, a lot of fake news, sometimes it’s important for you know people that are not receiving media in their native language to have that opportunity and be well-informed.
Peniston: For many listeners, Pulso Central is the only station providing news and important updates in Spanish, particularly critical during emergencies like severe weather or health crisis. Pulso Central is the only Spanish radio station in Central New York and Mohawk Valley that curates contents for the prominent Spanish speaking community. I guess you could say that Pulso Central is the heartbeat for information of this community and it’s just in its beginning stages. With an expanding audience and a mission to inform and unite Pulso Central is making a lasting impact on central New York’s Spanish speaking community. Reporting for NCC News I’m Gabriela Peniston.
SYRACUSE, N.Y. (NCC News) — For many years, Spanish-speaking communities in Central New York have had limited access to media in their native language. But now, Pulso Central, a new radio station, is changing that.
Launched in September, Pulso Central recently marked its debut with their grand opening event. The celebration featured music, panel discussions, food and networking opportunities, uniting the community in a shared moment of pride and progress.
Jesús Rolón, a key member of the Pulso Central team, expressed his excitement about the station’s mission.
“It feels really special,” Rolón said. “Special because I work a lot with the community and able to bring back this and give then give the community information, shows. So, I think this is a good feeling to be part of that group. So, like looking back, wow, what we built it was a great job.”
Hispanic and Latino residents make up about 5% of Central New York’s population, according to Data USA. While this may seem like a small number compared to larger cities, these communities have historically lacked access to local news and entertainment in Spanish. Pulso Central is filling that gap, providing vital updates and creating a platform for cultural expression.
The station’s role extends beyond entertainment. During emergencies, such as severe weather events or public health crises, Pulso Central ensures Spanish speakers receive critical information in their own language.
Jade Aulestia, a student volunteer at the station, highlighted the importance of this mission.
“It’s important for people that are not receiving media in their native language to have that opportunity and be well informed,“ Aulestia said.
Pulso Central isn’t just a radio station—it’s a source of connection for Spanish-speaking residents across Central New York.
