SYRACUSE, N.Y. (NCC News) — Voter registration in Onondaga County has reached record-breaking numbers, with nearly a month remaining until the deadline to register on Oct. 26.
In Onondaga County, there are currently 311,000 registered voters—3,000 more than in 2020—with 19,000 registration forms still waiting to be processed by election officials.
Several factors have contributed to this increase in voter registration, according to Dustin Czarny, Democratic board of elections commissioner for Onondaga County:
- Vice President Kamala Harris’ presidential nomination following President Biden’s withdrawal from the race
- The Democratic National Convention
- The first presidential debate between Harris and Donald Trump
- Taylor Swift’s endorsement of Harris
Experts have noticed a new trend in voter registration in Onondaga County. Voters who are not affiliated with any political party now rank second among registered voters, surpassing the number of Republicans.
Voter registration has been increasing nationally, especially in young and first-time voters, according to VOTE.org.
Oct. 26 is the last day to register to vote online or by mail. Visit Elections.NY.gov to register to vote in New York state.
