SYRACUSE, N.Y. (NCC News) — April is National Distracted Driving Awareness Month, and the New York State Police is joining a nationwide effort to crack down on distracted driving. The CDC reports that around 3,000 people die every year in crashes involving distracted drivers. The New York State Police is stepping up enforcement in hopes of changing that.

As part of “Operation Hang Up,” multiple troopers will patrol a selected area to catch drivers using handheld devices behind the wheel. This year’s enforcement runs from April 7 through April 14. Local officer Andrew Davis said texting and driving is among the most dangerous habits he has seen.

“Right now, by far, no doubt, texting and driving is by far the biggest problem with accidents and things of that nature,” he said.

Police departments across the country have also received federal grant money aimed at curbing distracted driving. Syracuse native Matthew Adamson said it’s a problem that affects drivers of all ages.

“Someone that cuts me off not paying attention is usually on their phone is what I’ve noticed. A lot of kids do it, and a lot of adults do it too, so I wouldn’t say it’s great,” added Adamson.

During last year’s “Operation Hang Up,” State Police issued nearly 22,000 tickets — with about 4,000 of those for distracted driving alone. Whether this year sees similar results remains to be seen.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reminds drivers to pull over before sending a text message to stay safe on the road.
