IT IS CURRENTLY 90 DEGREES AND IF ONE DOESN’T HAVE AIR CONDITIONING, IT WILL BE HARD TO STAY COOL.
ASIDE FROM REMAINING COOL, SAFETY IS MOST IMPORTANT.WITH EXTREME TEMPERATURES ON THE RISE, MANY ARE LOOKING FOR A PLACE TO COOL DOWN.
NUMEROUS LIBRARIES ACROSS ONONDAGA COUNTY HAVE BECOME COOLING CENTERS.
JAMESVILLE DEWITT LIBARARY MEMBER ROBERT CERMI SAYS LIBRARIES MAKE A SAFE COOLING CENTER.ROBERT:”The cooling system is good. It is a new building. They did a great job in this library. You know, safety is very important nowadays, especially if you want to a quiet place to to stay.”
MADISON: PETIT BRANCH CHILDREN’S LIBRARIAN QUINN GARDNER SAYS LIBRARIES ARE OPEN TO EVERYONE IN NEED OF AC.
SHE SAYS ITS ALL ABOUT COMMUNITY.QUINN: “Being a cool place where people can come and, you know, see their neighbors, maybe meet new people is always a great thing. And then they can also stay safe when it’s so, so hot.”
MADISON: GARDNER HAS PORTABLE AIR CONDITINERS AT HOME THAT CAN’T KEEP UP WITH THE HEAT.
QUINN:”I was getting ready this morning, I was like, okay, well, you know, I have to, you know, like I have to work today, but I get to spend eight hours in the AC, which will be much better than my house, which is just very warm.”
MADISON: EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR OF JAMESVILLE DEWITT COMMUNITY LIBARARY CHARLES DIEDE SAYS A LIBARARY MAKES FOR A PERFECT COOLING CENTER.
CHARLES: “I think, being a cooling center is pretty attractive as a library because not only can you come in and do nothing, you can come in and do 100 things, a million things.”
MADISON: ACCORDING TO THE NEW YORK STATE HEALTH DEPARTMENT THERE ARE OVER 30 COOLING CENTERS IN ONONDAGA COUNTY.
ASIDE FROM LOCAL LIBARIES THERE ARE MANY COMMUNITY AND SENIOR CENTERS THAT HAVE AIR CONNDITIONING AS WELL.

SYRACUSE, N.Y. (NCC News)- With Central New York under a heat advisory, many are looking for a place to cool down. Numerous libraries, community and senior centers have become cooling centers.
Robert Cermi said libraries make safe cooling centers.
“The cooling system is good. It is a new building,” said Cermi. “They did a great job in this library. You know, safety is very important nowadays, especially if you want to a quiet place to stay.”
Quinn Gardener, Petit Branch children’s librarian, said libraries are open to everyone in need of air conditioning. She said it’s all about community.
“Being a cool place where people can come and, you know, see their neighbors, maybe meet new people is always a great thing,” Gardener said. “And then they can also stay safe when it’s so, so hot.”
Gardner has portable air conditioners at home that can’t keep up with the heat.

Charles Diede, executive director of Jamesville Dewitt Community Library said a library makes for a perfect cooling center.
“I think, being a cooling center is pretty attractive as a library because not only can you come in and do nothing, you can come in and do 100 things, a million things,” said Diede.
According to the New York State Health Department there are over 30 cooling centers in Onondaga County. A full list of the cooling centers can be found here.
The heat advisory is scheduled to end Thursday night but temperatures will remain high throughout the weekend.
