Syracuse, N.Y. (NCC NEWS)  -At their Oct. 23, 2023 board meeting, the North Syracuse Central School District board of education decided to join in with other Central New York school districts in the lawsuit against major social media companies, including Meta, Snapchat, TikTok and YouTube.

NSCSD has shown resourcefulness for the support of mental health of students. The school’s information officer, Laurie Cook, believes is shown through the hard work of their director of social and emotional learning, Lisa Goldberg.

“She’s [Goldberg] spoken to different organizations about the things that North Syracuse is doing,” Cook said. “To, you know, put themselves at the top of the game when it comes to this area.”

NSCSD has nine different counselors available for grades 10 through 12, 16 social workers for the 11 different school buildings and resources available for crisis intervention, hotline numbers, general counseling, grief support, family support, substance abuse and eating disorders.

Goldberg’s work ensures that there is a counselor in every school building and social workers that are available to go to student’s homes when needed.

“There have been a lot of initiatives to really address the social and emotional needs of our students,” Cook said. “We have been fortunate to have some really great partners, Onondaga County has allocated extra funding.”

North Syracuse Central School District joins Oswego City School District, East Syracuse Minoa Central School District, Jamesville-DeWitt Central School District, Hannibal Central School District and the Mexico Central School District.
