SYRACUSE, N.Y. (NCC News) — With the May 7 Real ID enforcement deadline fast approaching, New York state is taking extra steps to make sure that everybody can meet TSA’s newest requirement.

Starting in April, New York State DMV offices are extending office hours on Thursdays from 7:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. This new schedule, running through May 7, is aimed to accommodate more appointments for residents who need to upgrade their ID in order to comply with the new federal travel regulations.

The Real ID Act, enforced by TSA, says that travelers must have a Real ID-compliant form of ID, even when boarding domestic flights, as well as to access certain federal facilities.

All five boroughs of New York City, as well as Westchester, Rockland, Nassau, and Suffolk counties will benefit from these extended hours.

In addition to these extended hours, the DMV offices are providing more appointments for Real ID and Enhanced ID upgrades, making it far more convenient for residents to get their upgraded IDs. With the May deadline forthcoming, it is crucial to act now, in order to avoid any potential travel disruptions

For those looking to update their IDs, the DMV demand is through the roof. And without it, travelers will need their passports, even for national flights.
