SYRACUSE, N.Y. (NCC News) – As a winter storm moves through Central New York, most colleges in the region have canceled classes Monday— except Syracuse University.
The following schools announced closures due to the severe weather:
- Cayuga Community College (Auburn and Fulton)
- Le Moyne College
- Morrisville State College
- Onondaga Community College
- SUNY Canton
- SUNY Oswego
- SUNY Polytechnic Institute
- SUNY Potsdam
- Tompkins Cortland Community College
Despite widespread closures, Syracuse University remains open, saying it is actively “monitoring weather conditions pertaining to the Lake Effect Snow Warning and High Wind Warning currently in effect,” the university said in a statement Monday morning.
“Based on current conditions, the University expects to remain open and operational today,” Syracuse University said.
The statement also noted that while the university rarely closes due to inclement weather, “individuals, many of whom travel to campus from outside the City of Syracuse, must make personal decisions based on a risk assessment related to travel,” according to the university.
It is not just major colleges in Central New York, but key school districts have issued cancellations. Central Square School District in Oswego County closed Monday due to widespread power outages across its buildings.
