SYRACUSE, N.Y. (NCC News — Nov. 4, 2025) — Voter turnout was light across Central New York on Election Day, but poll workers say the commitment to democracy remains strong.
Polling sites in Cicero and Syracuse opened before sunrise as volunteers and candidates greeted early voters. Cicero Town Supervisor candidate Rob Santucci stopped by to thank election workers, saying residents should take advantage of a right many people worldwide don’t have.
“Exercise your right to cast a ballot,” Santucci said. “Don’t waste it — let your voice be heard.”
Inside the polling centers, inspectors worked long hours to keep voting running smoothly. Terry Ettinger, a poll worker with the Onondaga County Board of Elections, said the job is about giving neighbors a chance to participate and showing that the system is secure and fair.
“We’re just everyday people doing our public duty,” said. “It’s rewarding to see the community take part.”
Officials say turnout typically drops during off-year elections, even though local positions like town supervisors and county legislators often impact daily life the most.
Polls in Onondaga County close at 9 p.m.

Cicero Town Supervisor candidate Rob Santucci stopped by a polling site to thank election workers and urge residents to vote.
Rob Santucci:
“My message to the voters is very simple — exercise your right to cast a ballot regardless of who you vote for. There are other countries in the world that do not have this privilege and opportunity. Don’t waste it. Get out, let your voice be heard.”

Election inspectors say turnout in this off-year vote is lighter than in major races, but the commitment to the process hasn’t changed. Many say the long hours are worth it to protect democracy on the local level.
Terry Ettinger, a poll worker with the Onondaga County Board of Elections, said helping neighbors cast their ballots makes the long day worthwhile.
Terry Ettinger:
“We’re just normal everyday people taking part in our public duty to make sure our neighbors have a chance to vote.”
