Noah Sandler: Marianna Ranieri-Schwarzer and Michael Schwarzer owned an art gallery in New York City for over twenty years. And about a year ago, they moved to Syracuse, took their gallery with them, and called it art haus SYR. Ranieri-Schwarzer said the goal has always been the same.
Marianna Ranieri-Schwarzer: To represent creatives, to give them a platform to shine, to grow, to push and to pull each other up.

SYRACUSE, N.Y. (NCC News) — Art haus SYR has been open in Armory Square for about a year. It showcases a rotating exhibit every six to eight weeks, featuring artists’ work from Central New York and elsewhere. Art haus features artists’ work, both two and three dimensional.
Marianna Ranieri-Schwarzer is the gallery’s curator and principal. Her partner Michael is a fine artist and principal, as is Jeffrey Appel. Spiro Spiliotis is the fourth and final principal. Marianna and Michael’s work has been centered on the same goal for over twenty years, since they started owning galleries.
“To represent creatives, to give them a platform to shine, to grow, to push each other and to pull each other up,” said Ranieri-Schwarzer.
Art haus SYR was born from a partnership proposal from Appel and Spiliotis to Ranieri-Schwarzer while hosting a pop-up gallery under their larger New York City brand of MIDOMA. MIDOMA was their gallery in New York City and is the brand behind the street gallery collections currently displaying artwork within vacant storefronts in downtown Syracuse. At all art haus SYR exhibitions, guests can scan a QR code to learn more about any piece within the exhibit, hear an audio clip from the artist and purchase the piece directly from the link.
Tim Rand is an artist featured at art haus and in the street galleries. He is from Clinton and has been featured in the Central New York gallery for a little over a month. Rand produces paintings and printmaking pieces. A few years ago, he worked with one of his friends as a farmer, which inspired his nature pieces.
“A lot of the imagery from this show is based around being kind of closer to nature through that farming experience,” Rand said.
Each time art haus SYR has a new exhibit, they hold a reception for guests to meet the artists whose work is featured.
“We try to engage the public with the artists or designers that are in the room,” Raneri-Schwarzer said. “We try to open that conversation between them.”
Rand was present at the most recent event and was able to speak with the crowd to share his story of himself and the art. He thanks Ranieri-Schwarzer for the welcoming experience at the event.
“Marianna makes you feel comfortable in the space,” Rand said. “It’s easier to talk to a crowd. and she prompts you, and that’s very helpful.”
Art haus SYR is generally open to the public from 12 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Tuesday and Wednesday, 12 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Thursday and Friday, and 12 p.m. to 6 p.m. on Friday. Visitors can also visit the street galleries around the city to see more featured artwork. More information about Midoma and the art haus can be found at this link.
