Tyus Sansbury: Election time can bring out many different feelings for many people which can affect mental health. For Syracuse native Pattron Middleton the election results caused a variety of feelings.

Pattron Middleton: While again, not surprising, scary and shocking. Shocking but not surprising. If that’s even a thing that can happen.

Sansbury: Marriage and family therapist Carrie Land-Steves says the negativity of campaigns impact people in many different ways.

Carrie Land-Steves: The overall feeling of negativity or overwhelmed. I would say that’s probably the feeling I’ve heard express the most is feeling really overwhelmed. Just by the amount of content, by the content itself.

Sansbury: Land-Steves says being in tune with yourself and finding a task that can help ease your mind can be helpful when dealing with mental health.

Land-Steves: Some people really do well with actively engaging in something. Journaling, Writing, Singing, drawing, coloring. Those kind of things.

Sansbury: Land-Steves says that some people are better with distraction. Whether you prefer actively engaging in an activity or distractions, finding out how to nurture your body to stay grounded can help change how you deal with any mental health problem. Tyus Sansbury NCC News.

How can people deal with mental health after an election

SYRACUSE, N.Y. (NCC News)— The American Psychological Association says that 69% of U.S. adults cite the election as the source of stress. Election time can cause people a variety of mental health problems.

Pattron Middleton, a Syracuse native, says Kamala Harris losing the 2024 presidential election to Donald Trump caused a variety of feelings.

“Not surprising, scary and shocking. Shocking but not surprising. If that’s even a thing that can happen,” said Middleton.

Marriage and family therapist Carrie Land-Steves says the negativity surrounding the political campaigns impact people in different ways.

“Overall feeling of negativity or overwhelmed. I would say that’s probably the feeling I’ve heard express the most is feeling really overwhelmed. Just by the amount of content, by the content itself,” said Land-Steves

To help deal with any mental health problem that arises, Land-Steves says finding a task that can help ease your mind can be helpful.

“Some people really do well with actively engaging in something. Journaling, writing, singing, drawing, coloring,” said Land-Steves. “Some people really do better with having distractions. Being able to turn something on that is completely different than what you are thinking about, feeling.”
