SYRACUSE, N.Y. (NCC News) – The snow is melted, rangers are out, and courses in Central New York are ready. The Drumlins Country Club Head Golf Professional is encouraged from a hot early start and is pumped for the 2023 season.
“Just all the action again, members coming back, students coming back to play golf you know the green grass getting out of white snow and dark skies to some sunshine and green grass,” said Drumlins CC Head Golf Professional Sean Dadey.
Even though last week was unseasonably warm, the beginning of golf season every year in Central New York can be very unpredictable. Courses like Drumlins Country Club and Tecumseh Golf Club were packed last week, but the cold and rainy weather this week has resulted in some frustrated golfers.
“At this time of the year it gets warm for a week or a couple days this year we got lucky with a week; you know I went golfing three times last week. I woke up yesterday and it’s freezing you know Syracuse is just doing us wrong.” said local golfer Grant Einhorn.
Even though the weather hindered Einhorn’s plans, the course benefits from the rain and helped the groundskeepers who worked countless hours to ensure that the course was ready. Since it heated up early this year, they hustled to tend to the greens and fairways. The Drumlins pro is pleased with the conditions of the course.
“The superintendent does some preventative maintenance going into the winter like putting down some snow mole to protect the green, some sand so when the weather starts to break there is a base on the grass that has kind of protected it,” said Dadey.
Drumlins and Tecumseh are ready as long as the weather permits. Even though it started hot, be sure to check the weather because it’s Syracuse and just because it was hot last week guarantees nothing for this week. Most importantly though, golf weather has started to return and being able to consistently golf is right around the corner.
