MATTYDALE, NY (NCC News) — Abdiweli Hared has been chasing the American dream since he moved to America almost 20 years ago — being a homeowner. Hared’s dream, which seemed unobtainable, is now real thanks to Habitat for Humanity.

Here in central New York, Habitat for Humanity works through volunteer-based programs to help build, renovate, and construct houses for qualifying individuals like Hared.

“It’s been a dream come true,” said Hared, a native of Somalia. “I’ve been living in the United States for almost 19 years, and I was living in a rental house.”

With the support of Habitat for Humanity, he is eagerly preparing to move into his new home this spring. The springtime move will not only have a permanent change of address but the flowering of Hared’s dream.

Future homeowners like Hared must go through the nonprofit organization’s application process. Eligible applicants must need safe, affordable housing, be of low to moderate income, partner with Habitat for Humanity, and pay an affordable mortgage.

Dedicated volunteers like Bill Dolan, the volunteer coordinator for Syracuse’s Habitat for Humanity, devote their time to make others’ home-owning dream come true.

“There’s a lot of gratification I get,” said Dolan. “Knowing I spent the last few years of my working life helping people – helping others.”

Syracuse’s Habitat for Humanity was founded in 1984, and since then, has built and renovated over 85 homes for individuals in need.

For future homeowners like Hared, their efforts are priceless.

“I really appreciate it,” said Hared. “I am thankful for them. I was not expecting to have it, but the grace of God, and them. Now I have it.”
