JASMINE TRENCHFIELD : Just a day before Election Day, Onondaga County has seen a grand turnout, with record breaking numbers of early voters. According to WAER, over 46,000 people have casted their ballots in the first five days of early voting, which surpasses early voting numbers in previous years.
Political science professor at Syracuse University, Grant Reeher says the intensity of this election is the driving force for early voting.
GRANT REEHER: It’s been super, super intense. And so I think that’s the third factor. So you add all that up and no surprise to me at all that people are like saying, I don’t want to wait till the last day. I want to make sure I get this vote in.
TRENCHFIELD: He says that the convenience of mail-in ballots and the option to vote early is a big factor as well.
REEHER: Anything that makes voting easier and more convenient is going to help turn out a little bit. Our turnout in this local area generally is higher than the national average.
TRENCHFIELD: With polls officially opening tomorrow morning, officials are urging people to vote at their assigned locations if they haven’t already. Jasmine Trenchfield, NCC News.
