SYRACUSE, N.Y. (NCC News) — Spencer Wirtheim is a student-athlete at Cornell University. He is a midfielder on the lacrosse team majoring in communications and double minoring in business and entrepreneurship. One passion that many may miss from Wirtheim is how he is also a coach giving back to the high school that fueled his competitive fire on the field.
“The biggest thing I took from high school that I brought into college is a work ethic we learned from the Baldwinsville program,” Wirtheim said. “That is something that has immensely helped me in the college level, is every summer, every winter, any break, you get kind of going home and recognizing the weaknesses that you need to work on and spending time on training sessions to work on those weaknesses.”
One of the players that Wirtheim helps the next generation of lacrosse players in Baldwinsville to improve on their weaknesses is his younger brother Dylan Wirtheim. A senior heading to Pennsylvania State University next year, Dylan having a strong season for the Bee’s netting 10 goals and two assists in his campaign. Dylan says he can feel the support from the town and community on their postseason run.
“We had a bunch of parents outside cheering on our bus when we’re on our way,” Dylan Wirtheim said. “They’re giving us a lot of love from the community and especially having my brother as a coach, someone at home, someone I’m close to, it’s really nice and a great environment to be a part of.”
In the hectic environment of playoffs both Spencer and Dylan are taking each day one day at a time.
“Got to focus on tomorrow,” Dylan Wirtheim said. “If we start off slow tomorrow with a sloppy practice, we might have a sloppy start to the game too. So you just have to focus on tomorrow and start off great.”
