CNY SPCA celebrates National Adopt a Shelter Dog Month
VIDEO TRANSCRIPT: CNY SPCA celebrates National Adopt a Shelter Dog Month

/Marie: If you’re looking to adopt a new pet, you’re in luck! October is Adopt a Shelter Dog Month. And a local animal shelter here in Central New York is working to find forever homes for all its furry friends.

Jean Madigan: Instead of going to pet stores or private breeders, we want people to come to the shelter to adopt here.

Marie: The Central New York Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, also known as the CNY SPCA, has been dealing with issues of animal neglect and cruelty since 1891. Right now, the organization has over 80 dogs that still need to find homes.

Jean: We’ve got probably like six dogs that have been here for over a year. You don’t want them living in a shelter all their life.

Marie: And there’s another reason why the CNY SPCA is recognizing Adopt a Shelter Dog Month.

Jean: All the shelters are overcrowded. We’re overcrowded. We’re overfilled. And we can’t take in new animals unless we adopt out the current animals.”

Marie: But there is a plan for an expansion at the organization’s current site. The goal is to make the shelter bigger and better.

Jean: We’re hoping to start a capital campaign soon. We’ll hopefully get monetary donations from the community, businesses and hopefully some grant support.

Aubry Revette: We definitely could use some space and some more facilities. That would be really nice. I, myself, have even adopted a few animals from here. Including a couple kitties.

Marie: But the shelter’s main goal is for every animal to find its forever home.

Jean: It’s a wonderful feeling to know that they’re getting that second chance into a family that’s going to love them.

Marie: If you’re interested in adopting a furry friend, you can stop by the CNY SPCA Monday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. We’ll have a link on our website tonight to learn more about the adoption process.

SYRACUSE, N.Y. (NCC News) — October is National Adopt a Shelter Dog Month. And the Central New York Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, also known at the CNY SPCA, is looking to find forever homes for all its animals.

“Instead of going to pet stores or private breeders, we want people to come to the shelter to adopt here,” said Jean Madigan, the fundraising and events manager of the CNY SPCA. “We have many different breeds…we work very, very hard to train our dogs and make sure that they are adoptable.”

Just this month alone, 60 cats, 19 dogs and two guinea pigs have been adopted. But the animal shelter still has around 83 dogs and 86 cats that are up for adoption. Madigan said the shelter is overcrowded.

“We can’t take in new animals unless we adopt out the current animals,” Madigan said. “We have one dog named Scooby…he’s been here for over a year. We’ve got probably like six dogs that have been here for over a year. They need to find their forever homes.”

But the CNY SPCA plans to expand on its current site. Madigan said the goal is to make the shelter bigger and better. But first, the organization needs to raise the funds.

“The plans are up on the wall. So we’re hoping to start a capital campaign soon,” Madigan said. “We’ll hopefully get monetary donations from the community, businesses and hopefully some grant support.”

Some volunteers at the CNY SPCA said the extra space would be beneficial.

“We definitely could use some space and some more facilities,” said Aubry Revette, a volunteer who works with cats at the CNY SPCA. “It would be really nice. I feel like we’re almost always at maximum.”

The CNY SPCA is also in need of supplies for the animals, including food and blankets.

“We have a wish list on our website,” Madigan said. “We have a drop box in the front office that people can put stuff in.”

If you’re interested in donating or would like to learn more about the adoption process, you can visit the CNY SPCA’s website. Or, you can stop by the animal shelter Monday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

“We want you to come here and adopt,” Madigan said. “It’s a wonderful feeling to know that they’re getting that second chance into a family that’s going to love them.”
