Patrick Smith: The year 1996, marking twenty-eight years since the Cicero-North Syracuse high school girl’s lacrosse team last tasted the sweetness of a state championship. But last Saturday, history was rewritten, and a new chapter began.
Brooke Molchanoff: It’s honestly so insane
Gabriella Pauline: Feels great
Marissa Doty: Feels amazing
Smith: On Saturday, C-NS defeated Fairport twelve to eight, winning the class a state championship. And for senior captain Gabriella Pauline. she had a different feeling about this year’s team.
Pauline: Honestly, this year was our year. I’ve been on varsity since 9th grade after COVID and honestly I just had a really good feeling about this year. Our team worked really hard together and I was just excited for us to show what we could do.
Smith: Last year, the NorthStar’s season fell short. Leaving the team wanting more.
Molchanoff: Probably just coming back last year from losing in sectionals and we worked really hard throughout the whole season. We all wanted the same goal and we just kept pushing and kept pushing and we all just worked together and we got it.
Smith: And working together, made that goal happen.
Pauline: We’ve always had the same goal of winning states, winning sectionals but this year I think we all really just came together and had a collective goal and everyday in practice you could see all of us working really hard.
Smith: And although this field right behind me may be home to the NorthStar’s Women’s Lacrosse team, where they train, practice, and even get ready for the state championship. There’s only one place where that state championship could be finished…And that place was Cortland, right behind me
Doty: I think we’ve definitely worked hard to get here. We had it written on our board in our locker room that this was a our goal for the season, so we definitely accomplished it.
Smith: It’s safe to say, their goal was met. Reporting for NCC News, I’m Patrick Smith.
SYRACUSE, NY (NCC News) — The Cicero-North Syracuse High School girl’s lacrosse team recently secured the Class A State Championship with a 12-8 victory over Fairport. This win ends a 28-year gap since their last state championship in 1996.
Senior captain Gabriella Pauline said everyone on the team worked together towards the same goal.
“Honestly, this year was our year. I’ve been on varsity since 9th grade, and after COVID, I just had a really good feeling about this season. Our team worked really hard together, and I was excited for us to show what we could do,” Pauline said.
Stephanie Prentice, the team’s coach, encouraged her squad to play their brand of lacrosse as they entered the final quarter with the game tied. This directive appeared to galvanize the team, as they surged ahead in the last quarter to secure the victory.
Brooke Molchanoff also emphasized the team’s determination.
“Probably just coming back last year from losing in sectionals, we worked really hard throughout the whole season. We all wanted the same goal, and we just kept pushing. We all worked together and we got it,” Molchanoff said.
This victory marks an important moment for the NorthStar’s lacrosse program. C-NS finished the season with a 19-2 record.
