SYRACUSE, N.Y. (NCC News): Yesterday, Onondaga County Executive Ryan MacMahon joined students from several Syracuse high schools and universities in using chalk to raise awareness for suicide prevention.

Students from Syracuse University, Le Moyne College, East Syracuse-Minoa High School, Westhill High School, and the Syracuse City School Disctrict joined MacMahon on National Coming Out Day to write positive messages on the ground in Syracuse. The event kicked off a weeklong series of over 150 similar events set to take place across Onondaga County.

MacMahon hopes the initiative will “cover the sidewalks with uplifting and positive messages”, According to the accompanying press release.

The initiative is part of the national “Chalk the Walk” movement meant to bring awareness to the ongoing National Suicide Prevention Month. If you or anyone you know needs support, call 988 to reach the Suicide and Crisis Lifeline.
