SYRACUSE, N.Y. (NCC News) – Businessman Tom Golisano is donating $360 million to multiple nonprofit organizations in New York. One of those is the Upstate Golisano Children’s Hospital in Syracuse.
He made the announcement on Tuesday at the Golisano Institute for Business and Entrepreneurship in Rochester.
The awards range from $250,000 to $20 million each and will be paid over the course of four to five years. Many Syracuse residents were both surprised and excited about the plan.
“I think it’s wonderful that someone who has that kind of money would donate something like that for something so beneficial for children in the area,” said one local. “I can’t even fathom having that much money, but I’m sure it’s excellent for the community, many families will benefit from that.”
Most of the organizations who will be getting a donation have received donations from Golisano in the past.
This September marks the 15th birthday of Golisano children’s hospital. On Tuesday and Wednesday, the Upstate Foundation will offer a special challenge to give back to the hospital. People can give a gift or leave a message on social media. Go to https://www.upstate.edu/gch/ to learn more.

RESIDENT: I think it’s wonderful that someone who has that kind of money would donate something like that for something so beneficial for children in the area. I can’t even fathom having that much money, but I’m sure it’s excellent for the community, many families will benefit from that.
STUDENT: I didn’t realize that the billionaires were giving away money like that to good causes. I’m really happy that the children over there at the children’s hospital are able to benefit from this and I hope that they continue to do more and donate so that the children can benefit.
