Syracuse, N.Y. (NCC News) — Syracuse University participated in the annual American Red Cross Blood Drive on Monday. With an ongoing nationwide blood shortage in America, student participation helps Syracuse, New York, fight its citywide shortage.

Blood Program Coordinator, Ryan Brown stresses the importance of diverse campus involvement to lessen the shortage.

“There is a lot different people from different backgrounds, and of course different blood types as well, so its important we have a wide population that knows what’s going on and we can spread the word and get them to donate,” he said.

The national blood supply dropped more than 25% in July of this year. Contrastingly, Brown said he was shocked at how quickly volunteers filled up donation slots.

“I know there is a blood shortage going on right now,” Brown said. “I think that shows that more people are aware of the shortage that is happening and are more eager to participate.”

The American Red Cross continues to combat this national blood shortage in as many ways as it can. They encourage other young and healthy individuals to consider volunteering and assisting in this battle for blood across the city of Syracuse and the nation.
