Syracuse, N.Y. (NCC News)- There aren’t many things that would draw a college student to spend their Sunday at school.

Newhouse students at Syracuse University showed up at 9:30 a.m. on Sunday and didn’t leave until 3 p.m.

A studio filled with more than 20 students from five different classes all came together to produce an ACC Network show.

The studio show consists of a live pregame and postgame show broadcasted on Cuse.tv. On the ESPN stream, there is a live halftime show from the Newhouse Studios.

All of the shows are primarily student run.

Each show is focused on an SU sporting event and it’s a complete team effort to get the show on air.

Students are assigned designated players and games to keep stats of while other students are producing pre-taped segments, which are slotted into each respective show. Others creategraphics, which are original for every block of the rundown. The producer, director and associate director are students.

Audrey Glynn, an SU senior studying Broadcast and Digital Journalism, is one of the main producers for the ACC Network Studio Shows.

“The really amazing thing about Syracuse is that it breeds confidence in people,” Glynn said. “So working for a network, like ACC network, that has some of these most competitive college teams in the country is the most amazing thing for my growth as a producer and as a person.”

The launch of the ACC Network in 2019 was a thrill for those who are fans of sporting events within the conference. The first year of the channel’s launch, Newhouse students were involved in over 90 total ACC Network Extra broadcasts, according to Newhouse.

The mastermind behind  the collaboration  between ACC Network and Newhouse is Professor Olivia Stomski. As the director of Newhouse’s Sports Media Center, she is in charge of facilitating these principal relationships.

“She oversees basic everything sports at this school, so she oversees our production,” Glynn said. “She’s here for every single show. It’s the most amazing thing to know that you can turn around and have any question and she will be right there to answer you, to help guide you.”

A dive into the deep end of broadcasting prepares students for a career outside of the Newhouser. Former students, like Annie Klaff , who graduated in May, are immediately rewarded upon entering the workforce.

With a full-time gig as a Digital Content Producer at MASN (Mid-Atlantic Sports Network), Klaff  has already had the opportunity to produce digital content for Nationals and Orioles games. Her work in the Newhouse studio has put her at an advantage, easily adapting to a brand new role that requires her to be successful in front of and behind the camera.

“You’re getting that kind of cohesion with people both in front of and behind the camera. Right now my job is both,” Klaff said. “The biggest thing that prepared me for my real job was just showing that I could have confidence and believe in myself on camera. That was my biggest struggle throughout my four years.”

The ACC network studio shows are a place students continue to come prove themselves. Klaff noted that putting yourself in this environment not only provides the chance to prove to others your skills and abilities, but to yourself as well.

“I think through Professor Stomski and through a lot of other people at the ACC network I was able to overcome that and tell myself that through reps and other people’s assurance that I can and will succeed in this industry.”
