SYRACUSE, N.Y. (NCC News) —This past Thursday, President Joe Biden held a press conference at Onondaga Community College to discuss Micron’s 100-billion-dollar investment. The 100-billion-dollar semiconductor plant will be built at the White Pine Commerce Park in Clay, New York.

The goal of this investment by Micron is to end the dependence on semiconductor chips outside the United States.

Biden wasn’t the only speaker in attendance for the record-breaking event. Governor Kathy Hochul, Senator Chuck Schumer, and Onondaga County executive Ryan McMahon also spoke at the conference.

Manish Bhatia is an executive Vice President for Micron, who also spoke at the event to discuss the Importance of the Semiconductor and why Clay was the choice for the plant.

“We chose Clay due to the state’s long history of semiconductor development and manufacturing, strong university network, a strong military, and defense networking,” Bhatia said. “This will provide a pipeline of technical talent and a great quality of life for our future workforce.”

The plant will be a way to have semiconductor chips in the United States and bring more jobs over the next 20 years.

“50,000 jobs – enough to fill every seat in the JMA Dome, where Syracuse will beat Notre Dame this week,” said Senator Chuck Schumer.

While it will be along the process, the hope from this investment is to create more jobs and help the community. Micron announced that they would invest $500,000 into the childcare desert.
