The Sunday before Halloween, Salt City Market in downtown Syracuse hosted its annual trick or treat event. The event invites kids and families to explore the market while enjoying free activities, games, and contests.

Princesses, plumbers, spiders, and skulls – no, this isn’t a joke – it’s Salt City market’s third annual trick or treat Halloween event. This past Sunday, kids from all over Syracuse got the chance to pick up some sweat treats around the market. Manager Adam Sudmann says shining a light on inclusivity is a top priority.
“The second mission is just as important. Is creating this sort of place where all of Syracuse feels a sense of belonging, recognition, fun, ownership.”
Marketing and communications manager CJ Butler says another main goal of the market is placemaking that feel intentional. Where people from all walks of life can come together.
“It’s really a democratized space, where everyone is an equal and the great thing about this Halloween event is that you see that happen with the families and with the kids. You see kids of all ages, from all different neighborhoods, all different kinds of costumes and they all come together and just get to have fun for a couple of hours.
The event featured coloring, cookie decorating, and even prizes for a costume contest. Before leaving, I had to ask the experts what costume they were most excited to see.
“Any Barbie costumes would be super fun. I feel like that’s right on topic for this year, so that would be super fun.”
“I have a weakness for 90s and 80s throwback costumes, so I’d be happy to see a teenage mutant ninja turtle.”

Kids from greater Syracuse got the opportunity to add to their candy bags from vendors around the market. Shining a light on inclusivity is a top priority, said market manager Adam Sudmann.
