VIDEO TRANSCRIPT: OCPL increases engagement through their digital presence

Elizabeth Gottlieb: There’s a new position for the Onondaga County Public library system. Colette Goldstein is the social media specialist at OCPL and works to increase the libraries’ digital presence.

Colette Goldstein: Tryna encourage engagement with our community and get people to show up to such a lovely resource the library offers.

Gottlieb: Goldstein makes both informational and creative videos online. Her “Banned Books” video got over 16,000 views.

Goldstein: Every night before I went to bed, I kept on thinking of ideas of what I want to do.

Gottlieb: Goldstein even gets OCPL staff involved with her videos. Yona Williams sees a need for the digital presence.

Yona Williams: So that we can reach more people and also share our ideas with a wider audience

Gottlieb: The goal of these videos is to show off the resources the library has to offer, like here at the maker space.

Goldstein: I want other people to know this, like thinking about the maker space. With sewing machine for fashion creators, there’s video cameras, there’s a recording studio if you are interested in producing music. There’s open mic nights, there’s creative writing workshops, there’s 3D printers! I mean there are so many things that I think young people love.

Gottlieb: OCPL’s social media has increased engagement online and within the library.

Goldstein: Someone said recently, I haven’t been to the library in so long, OK, after seeing this I want to go.

Gottlieb: Reporting for NCC news, I’m Elizabeth Gottlieb.

SYRACUSE, N.Y. (NCC News) – The Onondaga County Public Library system is turning to social media to raise awareness of their resources and get more people into the library.

Colette Goldstein is OCPL’s first social media specialist and is in charge of increasing the library system’s digital presence on TikTok and Instagram.

“There was a lot of talk about how to keep OCPL relevant in the present world. The world is changing fast and social media is the future of marketing,” said Goldstein.

Goldstein gets her co-workers involved with her videos. Yona Williams has been apart of several of Goldstein’s videos and after working for over four years at OCPL, she sees the importance of them.

“We were in dire need of having a social media presence, so that we can reach more people and also share our ideas with a wider audience,” said Williams.

Goldstein makes both informational videos and creative videos. The informational videos focus on the resources the library has to offer.

“I want other people to know this, like thinking about the maker space. With sewing machine for fashion creators, there’s video cameras, there’s a recording studio if you are interested in producing music. There’s open mic nights, there’s creative writing workshops, there’s 3D printers! I mean there are so many things that I think young people love,” said Goldstein.

OCPL’s “Banned Books Week” video has over 16,000 views on TikTok. Goldstein spent a lot of time coming up with the idea for that creative video.

“What do I want people to take from this video, I want them to know that banned books aren’t as scary as they sound. So, what can we use? We can use the loading dock as a set for a mock horror film, “said Goldstein.

OCPL’s social media has increased engagement online and within the library. Library visitors have recognized Goldstein and told her they have seen her videos.

Someone said recently, I haven’t been to the library in so long, OK, after seeing this I want to go,” said Goldstein.

OCPL’s Tiktok and Instagram handles are both @ocpl_cny.
