Elizabeth Gottlieb: I’m Elizabeth Gottlieb reporting for NCC News. Here are the stories making news today, March 31. A historical instrument is getting its own documentary series. A Syracuse University professor is co-producing a docuseries about the history of the organ. Doctor Anne Laver hopes that the docuseries will encourage more people to listen to and play the organ.
Anne Laver: How are they going to experience the organ? Well we gotta figure out new ways to do that. And one of them, I think, could be this film.
Gottlieb: The documentary received its funding to begin filming this week and will start the series with the history of organs in Central New York. The Syracuse City School District is considering adding a uniform policy for grades K through 8. The school district would provide these uniforms for free. Former SCSD teacher Anne Serlin says that this would relieve stress for families, but might limit student’s self-expression.
Anne Serlin: You don’t want kids who are exactly the same as other kids. You need kids to be able to express themselves in many ways, and some of those ways are in their clothing.
Gottlieb: The school district is asking students and families for their feedback on the proposed policy.
It’s the last day of the “Focus on the Feminine” exhibit at Petit Branch Library as Women’s History Month comes to a close. Adult services librarian Simcha Glassman says that this is the only exhibit this year to feature multiple artists.
Simcha Glassman: There’s such a mix of different art. There’s sculptures, there’s mix media, there’s quilts. And I think that kind of showcases really well the different things that women can do.
Gottlieb: The exhibit gives local women the opportunity to showcase their work to the community.
It’s a cloudy day in Syracuse, temperature should be up near 70 with a low of a few degrees above freezing. For NCC News, I’m Elizabeth Gottlieb reporting. You can find full stories on our website, nccnewsonline.com.
