Sophia McVige: Companies are looking for people with A-I experience. S-U student Hunter Tryloff notices this.
Hunter Tryloff: I put in a few applications to companies where that specifically stood out to them, as skills that could, you know, set someone apart from other applicants.
Sophia McVige: The minor is helping students with many interests. Professor Johannes Himmelriech says it’s setting students up for success.
Johannes Himmelriech: If your background is in policy studies, or political science then that is the kind of degree that shows wow you’ll be set up to work in A-I. But also if your background is in software engineering or computer science, having that minor shows that you are ready to address policy issues.

SYRACUSE, N.Y. (NCC News)– This fall, The Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs launched a new AI Policy minor. Becuase the use of AI is becoming more widespread in different fields of study, students and staff feel the addition this AI Policy minor to a variety of degrees makes students more hireable.
“I put in a few applications to companies where that specifically stood out to them, as skills that could, you know, set someone apart from other applicants.” Said SU junior Hunter Tryloff
Tryloff explains that he feels that our workforce is changing. A lot of employers are looking for people who have experience working with AI, and people who have the ability to adapt to new techonologies. The 18-credit minor helps students analyze complex problems, and govern emerging techonologies to serve the public good. I spoke to the director of the minor Professor Johannes Himmelriech about how the skills taught in this minor can apply to many different careers.
“If your background is in policy studies, or political science then that is the kind of degree that shows wow you’ll be set up to work in A-I. But also if your background is in software engineering or computer science, having that minor shows that you are ready to address policy issues.” Himmelriech explained.
Himmelriech is excited to see students with this minor combine their interests with AI in thier future careers.
