Sydney Chan: The hiring process for Syracuse’s next men’s basketball head coach continues after reports Tuesday that top candidate and current South Florida head coach Bryan Hodgson declined the SU job. WAER sports broadcaster Gino Antimarino says the uncertainty reflects a program adjusting to a new era of college athletics.
Gino Antimarino: I think Syracuse has to figure out… it doesn’t have a ton of money, comparatively to the other teams in the ACC. And you have to decide — do you wanna compete in basketball or do you wanna compete in football? Because I don’t think Syracuse has enough money and assets to be good in both.
Chan: Chris Boylan, a freshman from Homer, NY, about 40 minutes south of Syracuse, grew up going to SU games. He says the program feels different than it used to.
Chris Boylan: I remember going to, going to the Dome used to be this absolute occasion. And it was something you really, really looked forward to, to go watch this incredible basketball program. You’d see Jim Boeheim on the sidelines, and it doesn’t have that same feeling anymore.

SYRACUSE, N.Y. (NCC News) — The hiring process for Syracuse’s next men’s basketball head coach continues after reports Tuesday that top candidate and current South Florida head coach Bryan Hodgson declined the SU job.
WAER sports broadcaster Gino Antimarino said the uncertainty reflects a program adjusting to a new era of college athletics.
“The news about Hodgson kind of sums up where Syracuse has been the last few years, and especially in the last few, now that NIL has been such a big thing. It’s just sort of the ‘Wild, Wild West’,” Antimarino said.
“It doesn’t have a lot of money, comparatively to other teams in the ACC, and you have to decide — do you wanna compete in basketball or do you wanna compete in football? Because I don’t think Syracuse has enough money and assets to compete in both,” Antimarino added.
Chris Boylan, a freshman from Homer, NY, about 40 minutes south of Syracuse, grew up going to SU games. He said the program feels different than it used to.
“I remember going to the Dome used to be this absolute occasion, and it was something you really really looked forward to, to go watch this incredible basketball program. You’d see Jim Boeheim on the sidelines, and it doesn’t have that same feeling anymore,” Boylan said.
At his first press conference Thursday morning, new SU Director of Athletics Bryan Blair addressed the coaching search immediately, saying the process is well underway and the university hopes to have news soon.
