“It’s always been a hub for food sales. Whether they be wholesale or retail, the idea is how do you continue that. How do you keep the regional market growing for the next hundred years? What types of facilities, you know what was built almost 100 years ago is much different than what we need now in terms of cold storage and processing and light processing and everything.”

“The nice part about the market is that everybody loves the market. You come here, it’s a piece of the history of central New York. It’s a cultural icon in Central NY. People come here, they love it and they want to see it improve so getting the input is easy because people want to provide input in what they’re looking for.”

SYRACUSE, N.Y. (NCC News) – Onondaga County officials are working on an improvement plan for the Central New York Regional Market. The market is in need of infrastructure repairs, but has been unable to secure public funding since 2001. In May, it was released that the market was in a financial deficit.
“It’s always been a hub for food sales. Whether that be wholesale or retail, the idea is how do you continue that,” says Director of Onondaga County Department of Planning, Troy Waffner. “How do you keep the regional market growing for the next hundred years? What types of facilities, you know what was built almost 100 years ago is much different than what we need now in terms of cold storage and processing and light processing and everything.”
The CNY Central regional market has been serving the Syracuse community for 86 years, fostering a community between both its vendors and customers. The regional market also provides food for local schools, restaurants, and institutions in Onondaga County.
“I’m going to be happy that I work in the market as a vendor because all of my clients and customers are patient and tell me what’s wrong with my products,” says CNY Regional Market vendor Alma Nicotra.
The CNY Regional Market improvement plan will include investing money into the market for renovations to provide improved amenities for vendors and additional activities for customers. Onondaga County officials are also soliciting community feedback through online and exit surveys, as well as public presentations, to make sure they are making the changes the public wants.
“The nice part about the market is that everybody loves the market,” says Waffner. “You come here, it’s a piece of the history of central New York. It’s a cultural icon in Central NY. People come here, they love it and they want to see it improve so getting the input is easy because people want to provide input in what they’re looking for.”
In order to solicit community feedback, the next CNY Regional Market public meeting will be held on Dec. 2.
