SYRACUSE, N.Y. (NCC News) — Senior living is taking a new approach in Central New York. The Syracuse Common Council recognized Sai Sewa, a center that opened in June 2025, for its focus on nurturing the social aspect of senior living. The center helps older adults stay connected through community, culture, and personalized care that reflects the diverse needs of today’s aging population.
Founded by Zeeshawn James, Sai Sewa is described by its founder as the only adult daycare of its kind in Central New York, offering a multilingual and faith-sensitive environment. The name “Sai Sewa” means selfless service, which James says is at the heart of his work.
“We’re gathering all these elderly populations so they can realize we can still do something better out of whatever time we have left,” said James.
He said the center welcomes people from all backgrounds.
“Faith is very important to most of the cultures and community,” said James. The founder said the center provides time for residents’ morning devotional practices.
Sai Sewa offers several services for adults ages 60 and older. These include physical therapy, strength training, on-site nursing care, and vegetarian meals tailored to cultural dietary needs. The center also provides space for meditation, yoga and prayer. Group activities are available to increase social connection and community engagement.
Councilor Marty Nave spoke at the meeting on behalf of the center and emphasized its importance to the community, especially to immigrants.
“So many of our new Americans who have come to this country, who have made the North Side their home … who have engaged in our community. What Zeeshawn has done is unique,” said Nave.
Nave said he sees this center as a promising model for future facilities that promote activity, spirituality, and cultural inclusion.
